Preparation for Colonoscopy
WHAT TO DO IN ADVANCE?
- If you are diabetic call our
office or your family doctor’s office for detail instruction about insulin or
diabetic medications. Be sure to let your doctor know if you are allergic to any
- Aspirin, aspirin containing and aspirin like medications
(Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, etc.) and most arthritis medications should be stopped
2 weeks before.
- Coumadin and any other blood thinners, vitamins, iron and
other supplement should be stopped
5 days before Colonoscopy.
- If you need to take medication for pain or headache
take plain Tylenol. You
are allowed to take all other prescribed medications.
- You should avoid taking
foods that contain seeds three days before the
test. (Seeds are hard to expel and may plug the scope.)
- Having menstrual period on
the day of the procedure does not interfere with the test. Please use a tampon.
WHAT PREPARATION IS REQUIRED?
For the best possible examination, the colon must be completely free of solid
material. Follow these preparation directions, NOT the directions on the
package of Klean Prep or from some other clinic, pharmacy, etc.
the day before after a liquid
breakfast DO NOT take any solid food, milk, Jell-O, juices with pulp,
soup, consommé, broth, or dark or red drinks.
- YOU SHOULD TAKE as much clear fluids as you can (e.g. apple
juice, white grape juice, ginger ale, clear soft drinks, water, ice tea, clear
tea, Gatorade etc.) right until the time of the test unless you are also having
an ENDOSCOPY, in this case no fluids should be taken for 3 hours
before the tests.
For a MORNING APPOINTMENT:
On the day before the test, take 4
Dulcolax tablets at 5:00 p.m. and another 4 Dulcolax tablets at 7:00 p.m. (eight
tablets in total). Also between 5:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. take all 4 liters of
Klean Prep or substitute. You should continue other clear fluids.
For an AFTERNOON or evening
On the day before the test take 4 Dulcolax tablets
at 6:00 pm. On the day of the test take 4 Dulcolax tablets and start
Klean-Prep 7 hours before your procedure time. Finish all four (4) litres
of Klean-Prep 3 hours before your procedure.
What else to expext
- After starting the preparation you will have
the urge to go to the toilet (have diarrhea) and you may also have cramps. This is expected. You may feel little bit
- Drink Klean Prep over the given period of time. It is not good to finish it too
early. You should take all the solution even if you think your
bowel is clean. Also have a lot of other liquids to keep yourself properly
hydrated, to help cleaning of the bowel and not to feel too weak because of not
eating anything. It is normal that you may still have some liquid coming out at
the time of the procedure.
If you have problem drinking Klean
Prep because you are vomiting it, stop drinking, take Gravol, wait for
half an hour and then continue drinking.
If you have a headache you may
take plain Tylenol but not Aspirin or Aspirin-like medication.
